Although UMass’ Rachel Vallarelli may be the undisputed top goalie in the conference, the one to keep an eye on is Duquesne’s Jenna Bishop . Her 9.75 goals against average is what may help the Dukes get past Richmond. She is an important asset to her team as she pushed the Dukes past George Mason in the final game of the season. After a rough start to the season, the team has won six of the last eight games. Bishop has been a big reason for the turnaround. They were foiled 10-9 on Richmond’s senior day. This tournament game is one the Dukes can take given their confidence and performance on the road against the Spiders. I am excited to see what the offense can do and how they respond if they get down a goal or two early. ILWomen's Halley Griggs and Alyssa Murray Cometti went around the horn with ILWomen contributor Amari Pollard, Shooting Space podcast host Tari Kandemiri and Playing Catch-Up podcast co-host Rachael DeCecco for this year's Midseason Report. The CONFERENCE EDITION: HOT, NOT & IN BETWEENWe're approaching mid-March play, and already we've seen plenty of conference action underway coast-to-coast. Teams have put themselves in great position to earn top seeding in conference tournaments, while Alyssa Murray Cometti and Rachael DeCecco join Halley Griggs and, among many other things they discuss the Tewaaraton Watch List and how they'd guard Charlotte North. With exception to their last game, Richmond hasn’t scored more than 11 goals in its past five games. If Duquesne can put together a solid defensive plan, I can see them upsetting the Spiders. Making a run at UMass will take elite play on the goalie end from Jenna Bishop. Smart play with few turnovers could result in big upsets against the conference elites. It’s wild to think that a year ago this weekend was the final weekend of lacrosse for the 2020 season.  I don’t think that anyone would have guessed that even an entire year later, we are still living in this “new normal.” It is truly Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship atlantic lacrosse article Preview Inside LacrosseAtlantic 10 Tournament Championship atlantic lacrosse article Preview Inside Lacrosse In Evanston, the Scane Train came through as No. 3 Northwestern sprinted past No. 5 Penn State, 24-13, in the first of a pair of weekend Big Ten matchups. The rookie is second on the team in scoring with a total of 40 points on the season. An extremely accurate shooter she has also contributed 20 ground balls and 19 draw controls. In order for Richmond to advance, she can’t let her inexperience catch up. Watch for the middie to come out playing hard. Semifinals kick off on May 1st with all four teams playing in the afternoon. Whoever survives earns the right to move on and play for the title on Sunday May 3rd at noon. Should be exciting action! Although she may not be the highest scoring player for the Minutewomen, Hannah Murphy is an impact player. She has won 96 draw controls for UMass, making her a critical asset to the team’s success. The sophomore’s game is as fiery as her red hair. Second in scoring, she has 47 points. Murphy can grind on the other end as well. She has posted 34 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers so far. Watch what this middie can do and you’ll be impressed. More than anything it was an accomplishment to have so Although the teams may not have played quarterfinals, the final week was almost akin as many fought for the final spots. George Mason has grabbed its first berth since joining the Atlantic 10 last season. They came up with a crucial win at the end of the season to edge the hosting school George Washington out, atlantic lacrosse article but then faltered against Duquesne. Duquesne picked up the third seed by beating George Mason 13-9 in its final game of the season. Richmond will be the team they face off against first and are sitting with the No. 2 seed. Undefeated in conference play, UMass is holding on to the top of the mountain spot. George Mason may have gotten in at the last minute, but getting in is all that matters. Moving forward, the target for the relentless UMass defense will be Jacquelyn Spalding in their semifinal matchup. She’s just a sophomore but already has put together a solid career at George Mason. On the season, she’s second in the league in points with 57. Last season she participated in 15 games so she also brings some experience. With the best defense in the conference, UMass is seemingly unstoppable. The scoring defense ranks second in the country at 5.53 and is only behind Stony Brook. Even in their loss against No. 20 Albany, the Minutewomen managed to hold them to just seven goals. Senior goalie Rachel Vallarelli is the best goalie in the entire nation with a 5.07 goals against average. Being undefeated for so long in conference play, it is hard for me to see this streak coming to an end. I’m taking UMass. Despite the other teams scoring reputations, the most points scored in a game this season by an Atlantic 10 player was 11 by Emily Doyle. The explosion came in a game against St. Bonaventure. Richmond will need to make sure they leave no points out on the field if they want to beat Duquesne. They are capable of putting up big numbers but can’t fall prey to turnovers. Alright my goalie friends. It is a sad day today, our last day of Goalie The Minutewomen have won an astonish 46-straight conference win streak that spans over six years. Think about that! It is amazing. They suffered only one loss this season and it came against a ranked Albany team. It won’t be easy for any team to put them away. But if you told people in January how Syracuse would get there — and more notably, who it would get there without —  they may not have believed Here’s an interesting fact: since 2011, George Mason has lost zero games in overtime. Massachusetts finished the regular season undefeated in the Atlantic 10 conference and is the clear team to beat in the tournament. This streak has run up to 46 games and spans over six years. Dominant is an understatement. However, the most impressive statistic UMass leads in is goals against average this season. They only give up 6.41 per game while the next closest team is Richmond at 11.19. As if that weren’t enough, the ladies are currently rolling on a 9-game win streak. Without a doubt, the Minutewomen will be the Goliath of the tournament that all the other teams will try and take out.
